A story of Playful & True Love. in the beginning, when it’s in its purest and simplest form. Having received in your heart what you desired, and it was delivered, and shared with the person you thought would forever be your best friend, your partner, and your soul-mate. It is what we all desire and long for, and welcoming it in with great pleasure. The painting was conceived and designed as a tribute and to remember the sweetness of the beginning of a new love, as it develops and grows with the hopes that it would last forever. Having each person push away the demands of the outside world for those special and often fleeting moments that they could Close their eyes and see, and feel, and remember, and know … so they could, close their eyes and believe …

Close your eyes and see –

Searching for the contentment

of walking along a trail,

together,

wanting to love and be loved,

sharing fleeting moments

of laughter, pleasure,

leaving impressions for all time.

Exploring the mysteries

of what lies beneath

the looks, the sigh, the frown,

or the quick sparkle of an eye.

Close your eyes and feel –

Wandering together,

yet apart, but close enough

to smell the fragrance, well-known,

to feel the warmth of a close touch,

the anticipation

of a moment not yet arrived,

new, and familiar.

Close your eyes and remember –

Impossible to live apart,

you’re not,

Each of you connected in heart,

in thought,

in and within each other,

knowing well,

sealed through time

how it feels

when the other looks into,

      and sees, and knows

      and understands

That strong and gentle love.

Close your eyes and know –

That you found yourself thirsty,

and tasted the sweetness,

you spoke and listened,

you created, something of your own,

that you will always find yourselves,

Together.

Come. Look. Closer.

Close your eyes and believe.

Valentine's Day Flowers are always received well and loved. Giving flowers makes them feel even more special. There are so many different kinds but some important factors are your relationship with them and your budget. You can always refer to the color meanings and flower symbolisms or look to see what their Birth Month Flower is and go with that, attach a special note about the meaning of the flowers or colors.

We are drawn to Big, Colorful Tulips
SKY and HEAVENS

We are drawn to Tulips because they are easy to recognize by their shape and always have such striking colors. When given as gifts, they are not too soft, or too bold, not too elegant or romantic, but loving and friendly. They are not too big or small, they are always the perfect size. They make you feel hugged, happy, cozy and comfortable, just as we all want to be.

The tulip originated over ten decades ago in Persia and Turkey. As Europeans started taking an interest in the flower, they gained in popularity, especially in the Netherlands.

Cultivated varieties include the Dutch Tulip, even though they are grown throughout the world.

TULIP MANIA

A 17th century phenomenon, named the ‘Tulip Mania,’ happened when the flower bulbs became so sought after and highly prized that prices for them went astronomically high. The demand was so great that prices soared and soared and then crashed very hard.

The history of tulips is as full of stories and as colorful as the flowers. In the 1600’s, tulips were enjoyed by only the very wealthy. They were rare and were status symbols for the European aristocrats. When the buying mania exploded, a single tulip bulb could fetched a $2,250 in U.S. dollars. The mania reached its highest amounts between 1634 to 1637, and we duly named it "Tulipomania." This tulip mania is compared to the stock market craze of the 1920’s. Tulips do have a stately appearance, but today they are owned by the masses and have become one of the most popular spring flowers.

NOT ORIGINALLY FROM HOLLAND

Tulips are from Central Asia. Daffodils are from Spain and Portugal. Holland does a lot of work on bulb flowers, developing them, producing them and exporting them. Many people travel to see the bulb fields and gardens. But Tulips are native to other far-away places. Bulbs did not naturally come from Holland. Dahlias are from Mexico. South American is the native home of Amarylis. South Africa for Freesias and Callases. Lilies are from China, Japan and North America.

Original, natural, wild Tulips look nothing close to the ones developed, sold and grown today. There are so many different types and kinds available today and these Tulip flowers receive all the attention. It’s difficult to find the wild, native forms of the Tulip flower.

HOW MANY Tulip BULBS?
(Nymphaea odorata)

Over nine billion flower bulbs a year are produced in Holland’s hybridization production fields today. Science and beauty and some smart marketing have caused the explosion of the need and desire to own bulb flowers. If you are able to make a trip to Holland, you can visit the 70-acre famous Keukenhof garden in Lisse. It is open every year to visitors during the spring bulb bloom. Millions of people flock there to see millions of bulbs in bloom. There are sculptures, lakes and winding pathways. It is the largest garden in the world, Holland.

TULIP COLORS – MEANING

Tulips overall represent perfect love but different colors of tulip flowers take on different meanings and significance. Red Tulips are seen as true love, not just romantic but any type of love. Purple symbolizes royalty, elegance, richness, deepness. Yellow Tulips have taken on a modern theme of friendship, happiness, cheerfulness and sunshine. White Tulips are used to get a person’s attention, ask for forgiveness or mercy, or to be thought of in a kind way.

There are many variant colors that are mixed together, striped, edged or blended. Tulip colors are rich and deep but seem to glow in the light, making parts of them bright, with the light reflecting through. This gives them both a strong and a soft, warm look, all at the same time.

Holland The Netherlands

The Netherlands (Holland) is one of the smallest countries in the world. They have over 6 million people living there. Holland is located in Western Europe, between Germany, Belgium and at the other side of the North Sea, lies England. The Netherland’s capital is Amsterdam.

Commercial flower bulb cultivation started in and around Haarlem about 400 years ago. Then it spread to the north and south. The area between Haarlem and Leiden is know as the ‘bulb district.’ Many resident, for many years, made most of their money from flower bulbs industries

How Tulip growing started in Holland

At the end of the 16th century, Tulip flowers were introduced into the Netherlands by Carolus Clusius. Everyone took an interest in the beautiful flowers and bulb and started experimenting with them in many gardens. The demand grew. It was found that coastal areas had perfect conditions for growing tulips, with its mild winters and cool summers plus great soil, consistently wet but great water drainage. The Netherlands had a center of trade and help with the exportation of the bulbs.

GROWING TULIPS
Encouraging Tulips To Repeat Bloom

Daffodils return year after year, dependably. They are repeater that give you more and more blooms as they spread. Tulips are easy to grow in the garden and the first year they spring up looking big, colorful and lovely. But they can have problems in years after their first bloom. It is a perennial flower but sometimes we have to treat it like an annual, that needs to be replanted each fall to bloom in the spring. Since it is a perennial, it should bloom each year. The problem is that our western weather is not the same as where the bulbs originated from, some 400 years ago, in Turkey. Where the winters are cold and the summers hot and dry.

The Dutch have sandy soil but it’s wet there year around. They have a proven technological way to replicate the growing conditions that are needed to encourage growth and replicate each year. We cannot duplicate their precise growing conditions and treatments. So they have millions of bulbs, and supply us with new ones each year.

Tips & Guidelines for getting Top Performance for your
Home grown Tulips

Plant bulbs in a well-drained area. This is always good advice for planting bulbs, and is essential to have perennial repeat blooming. Overly wet soil causes the presence of fungus and disease or it can rot the bulbs. You can add organic matter to help facilitate drainage.

Plant tulip bulbs six to eight inches deep. Always water the tulip bulbs sufficiently but without standing water, after planting to get them started. This will help it develop a strong root system in the fall before going dormant in the winter.

Once they have bloomed in the spring, after the tulip blossoms have wilted, trip off the flower heads and let the green leaves & stem foliage to die back. This way the plant will continue to grow strong roots, so it can be healthy next blooming season. This will the bulb be perennial.

Fertilize is important. Fertilize the bulbs in the fall and spring. Unless, you treat the bulbs like annuals, then it is not necessary to fertilize them. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer or special bulb fertilizer.

Plant your bulbs in the fall. Space them 4 inches apart.
If you plant a tulip seed instead of a bulb it will not bloom for 5-7 years.

Varieties of Tulips

Colors, sizes, types. There are many. Overall there are about 1,700 varieties of tulips, with about 80 percent of them come from the Netherlands where the growing conditions are optimal.

It takes about 5 years to develop a tulip bulb. Horticulturists harvest the seeds one year and place them in a special room. They then remain outside for another year. The next three years it is in the field waiting for a bulb to develop. To create a new species it would take about 20 years. What you do now will not show results for years.

Perennial tulips should come back year after year, unlike many of the hybrids.

WHAT ARE TULIPS?

Tulip is a genus that has some 100 species of flowering plants in the botanical family Liliaceae. The cultivated varieties are associated with Holland, but tulips are also native to southern Europe, north Africa and Asia. The tulip is the national flower of Iran and Turkey.

Tulips are perennial bulbous plants. We recognize them quickly. They have six petals which are called ‘tepals.’

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Lilliopsida
Order: Liliales
Family: Liliaceae
Genus: Tulipa

FRESH CUT TULIP BOUQUETS & ARRANGEMENTS

Cut the stems diagonally. Put in vase with fresh water and plant food. Re-cut the stem diagonally and replace with fresh water daily. Keep out of direct sunlight. Tulips should last 7 to 10 days cut and placed in a vase.

Growing Tulips in Containers

Alert – If you are going to grow the tulips in a container, keep the container out of direct sunlight and warm areas. The soil needs to remain cool or the plant will think it is spring. This will cause the tulip bulb to grow a stem and try to bloom too early. The root system will not have developed properly at this time.

Flowers Meaning, Symbolism, History

SKY and HEAVENS

Irises reach up to the sky, the heaven, and Iris Flowers reach down to touch the earth. We are drawn to the beauty of the Iris, their distinct symmetrical form, their amazing colors that are both soft and gentle mixing together with rich, vivid and sometimes bold designs. The standards (petals rising upward) and their falls (petals reaching downward) have patterns and colors that complement and contrast each other, creating sights unlike any other flowers.

From Heaven to Earth – Messengers

Iris, means rainbow in Greek. Irises get their name from the Greek Goddess Iris, the goddess of the rainbow. Iris was a messenger on Mount Olympus that carried messages from the ‘eye of heaven’ to the earth by the arc of the rainbow. She was the link between heaven and earth. The messenger, that committed the heavens to the earth, and the earth to the heavens. Iris flowers have been historically important in many cultures for centuries.

Irises – Having Faith, Wisdom and Valor

The Iris flower has three petals which are called the "standards" and the three outer petal-like sepals are called "falls."

Three leaves of the Iris flower represent faith, wisdom, and valor. The Iris is a symbol of royalty, divine protection with some exotic and exquisite undertones that intrigue and inspire us.

Iris Flowers have 200-300 species

Irises have a striking uniqueness and absolute stunning beauty to them. There are over 200 (200-300) varieties in a wide variety of colors. Found in virtually every part of the world, Irises grow well in gardens, on farms and naturally through the countryside. In cut flower bouquets, you’ll usually find the deeply colored blue Dutch Iris flower, or the white and yellow varieties.

Iris rhizomes contain terpenes, organic acids (miristic acid, undecilene acid, tridecilic acid), glycosides, and iridin. The leaves contain ascorbic acid.

Artist Vincent van Gogh painted several famous pictures of irises.

Artist Baslee Troutman, in the "Day Star Garden" art print collection, has several contemporary, modern decorative giclee art prints of Iris flowers available in many sizes of paper and canvas, that display the vibrant and amazingly vivid colors of the flowers in full bloom against a beautiful blue sky. Capturing all the fine details, with colors running up the veins and spreading and blending out to the edges of the flower. The Iris flowers in these wall art prints seem to reach out to you from the fresh, original surrounding foliage and eye-catching patterns and designs.

Irises – Ancient times to Modern day

Drawings have been found of Irises in several Egyptian palaces. During the Middle Ages, the meaning of irises became linked to the French monarchy. The Fleur-de-lis became the recognized national symbol of France. For many years, Irises were used to make perfume and medicinal remedies.

Dark blue or purple iris can denote royalty. Yellow irises are a symbol of passion and happiness. They can also express meaning of having courage and admiration.

Giving Irises and Iris flowers are a great choice for many occasions. Birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, celebrations, thinking of you, thank you, miss you, welcome, congratulations, corporate & office settings, sympathy, get well, Motivation, good job, new account, good customer, appreciation, open houses and Mother’s Day are excellent occasions to give the gift everyone enjoys. Bouquets, Iris flower art prints or a gardening basket filled with Iris bulbs and rhizomes to plant in the fall will pleasantly surprise the recipient. Iris flowers are so universal for invoking feelings of well-being, happiness and cheerfulness. They open the way for calm, soothing feelings and emotions that are thoughtful, deep, rich and meaningful, letting us put aside our busy, hectic lives for awhile and help us connect with others.

Happy New Year!! Baslee Troutman wishing you healthy, happy and prosperous travels.

What Gardener’s Grow

Iris flower gardeners grow mostly two types of Irises, bearded Irises and beardless Irises. Or at least, that’s how most of us think of them. Most people grow the many varieties and colors of the bearded irises. Iris society groups categories them further by sizes which are miniature dwarf, dwarf, intermediate, miniature tall, border, and tall.

The beardless iris flower group is a very wide group. Popular beardless irises are the Siberian, Japanese, Louisiana and Pacific Coast irises.

Irises STANDING Erect, Tall & Lush

They have long, erect hearty stems that can branch, weaving back and forth, to keep the main balance point intact. Often they have multiple blooms. The rhizome species of Irises will usually have 3-10 basal, sword-shaped leaves that criss-cross over each other from the base of the plant, moving upward and fanning out from there.

The iris flowers have six fleshy petal lobes. The 6 petals of the flower are divided into 3 sepals, called "FALLS" which droop downwards. There are three petals that stand upright, called "STANDARDS" that are partially behind the sepal bases.

Perennials with Fuzzy Beards

The Iris is a perennial flower that got its Latin name "Rainbow." All irises put on splendid color and design shows. The falls offer pollinators an area to land on and you can see how the designs and colors guide leading the pollinators to the inside of the flower’s den or mouth. They are like nectar guides, directing pollinators towards the nectar area. Some Irises have fuzzy beards near the opening that look like short bristle type hairs or prongs that the pollinators can use to hold onto while getting in and out of the Iris flower.

FRAGRANT PERFUME

Rhizomes of the bearded iris produce the orris root which can be used to make perfume and medicine, although done more commonly in ancient times, than today. Iris essential oil (absolute) from the iris flowers are sometimes used in Aromatherapy as an sedative. When the iris rhizomes are harvested, they are dried and stored for many years. The fats and oils inside the roots undergo degradation and oxidation, which produces a fragrance. The perfume industry will create iris butter by steam distilling the aged rhizomes to produce a thick oily compound.

AFFECTING EMOTIONS, MOODS, FEELINGS
COLOR MEANING, SYMBOLISM

Iris Symbolism – What does it Mean?

The fleur-de-lis, a designed stylized iris, came from the white iris which is native to Florence and Italy. The Iris grew in the city walls. The white Iris symbol is put on top of a red background and became the symbol of Florence. When the Medici family wanted to show a change in power, it was changed to a red Iris on a white background. They tried for many years to develop a red iris, without being completely successful. Catherine de Medici carried the changed symbol of Florence to Paris when she married the king of France, where the irises obtained it’s famous name, fleur-de-lis.

The Iris is used in symbols including on the Quebec flag, the logo for the New Orleans Saints professional football team, and on the Saint Louis, Missouri flag. This iris symbol has been associated with France as Louis VII when he adopted it as a symbol in the 12th Century and it is also widely known symbol of Scouting and the sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Today, the iris is the state flower of Tennessee, and the Fleur-de-lis is the emblem for the city of New Orleans. Irises are grown and cultivated all over the world, and they can be found naturally in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, northern Africa, Asia, and North America.

Blue Iris Flowers

You can find 100’s of different types of Iris flowers, but the blue iris flowers are grown often and most commonly used as cut flowers, along with white and yellow ones. The sheer magnificence of these Blue Irises make them the most popular. They are used quite often to express appreciation and devotion to another person. They can indicate royalty, valor, heroism, courage and richness.

The Blue iris is easy to cultivate and a hardy plant. They can be propagated by dividing them into new plants. Each year they will grow more thick and dense with many flower blooms on each stock.

IRIS FLOWERS
are Hardy and Easy to Grow

Irises are among the easiest of perennials to grow. If you haven’t ever grown any, now is the time to grow what you have always admired. You can never have too many different colors and types of irises. They take little care and reward you with a huge payoff in beauty, color and unparalleled design.

Their thick fleshy root which is called a ‘rhizome’ (pronounced rye-zome). It’s texture resembles potato. When you decide to buy a new iris to plant, you will most likely receive a rhizome root that has the roots and leaves clipped off. Plant the Iris rhizome root as soon as you can, ideally within two weeks after receiving it. Label your plants in the garden or jot down a note in your garden book with a diagram.

Irises are Happy in Sunny Spots

Plant your Irises in a sunny spot that has well drained soil. Prepare the soil a few weeks before you receive the iris. The soil around the rhizome should be good, turned soil for around 1 foot, both in depth and width, for the best growth of roots and blooms. Irises will do quite well if they don’t have to fight for soil, water and sunlight. Keep weeds and grass away from roots. The roots grow very close and along the surface.

PLANTING Irises – How Deep & how Far Apart

The Iris rhizomes should be planted near the surface with the top just below the surface, with the rest buried firmly in the rich, fertilized soil. Keep the Iris above any standing water.

Plant your Irises at least a 1 1/2 feet apart. Irises will propagate by growing new parts to the rhizome where new bloom stalks will come up each year. They will get thicker each year. After about 2-3 years, the rhizomes will start to crowd each other at the top. It’s time to divide the plant by cutting the newer parts off and discarding the older parts. Replant the newer Iris flower rhizome roots or give them away.

SHARE Your Iris Flowers with FAMILY AND FRIENDS

After a few years you will have enough to share with family and friends. Dig them up to divide them in July or August, a few months after their bloom. The rhizome roots should not dry out, while being stored during the winter. Bearded irises should be planted in the fall or very early spring. Water them heavily when transplanting them.

Color affects the way we perceive the world, evoking certain emotions, feelings and can alter our moods and sense of well-being.

Either consciously or subconsciously our minds understand that all colors have deep seated meanings and natural associations with certain expressions. Sometimes we understand the message we are sending with certain colors, and other times, we choose colors because it feels right and expresses what we would like to share.

The symbolism of flower colors runs deep in tradition and history. Every color and flower combination has his own particular meaning. Every flower color from deep red roses to a bright yellow daffodils offer meaningful stories and outcomes. The flower colors we choose for bouquets, or in our art, are as important as the types of flowers placed in our arrangements.

The colors we decide to use when giving flowers, in the ART we display, and in decorating our home, have both subtle or bold impacts on perceptions of our surroundings, and how others feel about who we really are, what we represent and what we want in life.

The blue from the our vast skies and expansiveness of the ocean represents openness, eternity and feelings of calm. It removes any feelings of being closed in or trapped. It brings the outdoors, inside. Forever, open, clean.

FLOWER SYMBOLISM – What do they Mean?
Roles of Flowers in Life

With many plants blooming for only a few weeks, most often in spring or summer, individual flowers tend to be short-lived. Flowers have a birth, and mature into delicate, colorful, and scented beings, and then start their decline until they vanish as quickly as they came. From these qualities emerge the symbolic meanings of flowers representing life and death, and all in between.

Flowers have many meanings, swelling from tender bud to full bloom, they are associated with youth, beauty, and pleasure. They are connected with the birth, the return of Spring after winter. Encompassing all that is in between, from purity to passion. But because they do wilt and die, flowers also represent fragility and the swift passage of time, leading us from life into death, and then into a heavenly rebirth.

Flower shapes also have had significance meaning. Blossoms that have petals projecting outward much like rays of light from the sun have been associated with being centered – within the world, the universe, or our consciousness.

Historical Language of Flowers
Home grown Tulips

During the late 1800’s in Europe, a system grew for understanding and communicating what flowers represented and what messages were attached through flower arrangements. They created Code Books to guide people in composing or reading floral messages. They would be required to recognize flowers and blooms and how tradition or myth affected the use of the elaborate language presented in any flower arrangements.

Many symbolism are in play today and their original meaning is carried forward from ancient times, stories, mythology and significance in other cultures.

Iris Symbolism – What does it Mean?

The fleur-de-lis, a designed stylized iris, came from the white iris which is native to Florence and Italy. It even grew in its city walls. This white iris is placed on top of a red background and originally became the symbol of Florence. It was changed when the Medici family wanted to show a change in political power, so they reversed the red and white colors, making the white iris red with a white background. This drove them to trying to develop a red iris for many centuries, without complete success.

Iris Flowers & Art
Expressing Ourselves with Color in Art & Flowers

Millions of people surround themselves with art, and find that it brings a fulfilling satisfaction, not only to themselves but to others. It’s both a simple and sophisticate way of sharing and expressing our views, beliefs, hopes, desires and dreams. When a colorful gift is given, it is remembered and cherished.

All of us need inspiration in order to prosper and live lives filled with satisfaction, fulfillment and meaning. Without a means of expressing ourselves, we’ll have less vitality and substance and depth. Our world is filled with an overwhelming number of advertisements that are sent out all day, every day and flood us with messages. Many of them unwanted. Color, Art and Flowers let us get away from the over-business or routine, mundane tasks and mechanical motions we sometimes find ourselves in.

That is why we are always on the search for something that inspires us, restores us, inviting us in and letting us belong. The reward is knowing that you took part in bringing beauty into the world, you were the source.

Blue Iris Flower

The Iris is a perennial flower, which blooms from rhizomes, that got its well-deserved name from Latin, meaning 'rainbow'. The deep blue Iris flowers are a rich variety of the flower. Mixed with Yellow Irises they look exceptional.

While irises appear in almost all shades except black with many, many combinations of colors and designs, the blue iris flowers are highly used as cut flowers in bouquets in vases or flower arrangements.

The popularity of the blue iris flower is mostly attributed to the sheer magnificence and beauty of these flowers. They are gorgeous. The blue iris has significant meanings associated with it. For centuries, Iris flowers have been used to show appreciation and devotion and faith. Many feel that it represents royalty and richness, magnificence, heroism, valor and courage.

Blue Iris flowers always make popular bouquets and look lovely in vases. Best of all, they are appropriate for all occasions.
